The Victim: The Literature of Trauma

This book listens to what cannot easily be said: to trauma at the moment it turns from lived event into literary form. The author does not treat the wound as an external subject that literature writes about, but as a force that reshapes language itself — unsettling time, fracturing narrative, and imposing on the text a poetics that arises from damage rather than from wholeness.

Moving across the Palestinian, Syrian, and Iraqi experiences, the study reads how trauma passes from the body of the victim into the very structure of the text: how silence becomes a sign, repetition a symptom, and perforated memory a method of writing. It is an inquiry into the aesthetics of pain, and into the way literature preserves what official archives fail to hold.

The author seeks neither consolation nor an ending that closes the wound, but an understanding of how the victim, in literature, is transformed — from an object of pity into a speaking self, from something acted upon into an agent that produces its own meaning.
